There seems to be no limit as to what might be possible with the OpenCL™ pipeline between AMD processors and key Adobe® Creative Cloud™ products. It was only one year ago, at NAB 2013, when AMD first revealed OpenCL-enabled acceleration on Windows for Adobe’s Mercury Playback Engine and its implementation in Adobe® Premiere® Pro CC. This powerful combination gave users a taste of what massive compute power and fantastic professional video software could do together to enhance both speed and productivity. Since then, Adobe and AMD have collaborated to deliver dozens and dozens of optimizations that help speed everyday workflows and offer never-before seen features (check out this post if you need to get caught up). These incredible optimized features are available on both AMD-powered Windows and Apple systems, including the awesome new dual AMD FirePro™ graphics-based Apple Mac Pro systems. Now NAB 2014 is here and the AMD-Adobe relationship continues to deliver a flood of amazing new features. You can read a summary of the highlight here or come by the AMD booth (SL10405—be sure to say hi). We are super excited to introduce our new AMD FirePro™ W9100 cards - perfect for demanding video workflows - check out what Al Mooney, Senior Product Manager, Professional Video Editing at Adobe as to say:
We will showing lots of great demos including a SuperMicro SuperWorkstation (see below) - in fact, have been very pleased with the initial testing of Adobe Media Encoder CC on this system and are seeing great scaling across up to 4 - AMD FirePro™ W9100 cards.

(System Config): 2 x Intel E5-2680 @ 2.70GHz, 32GB RAM Kingston DDR3-1600 CL9, Win7-64bit, 250gb Primary SSD OCZ Vertex 4, 750GB Secondary SSD Samsung 840EVO, AMD Driver 13.35
I’m going to walk you through some real world examples of what AMD App Acceleration via the open standard OpenCL API brings to the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC and the entire video workflow in Adobe Creative Cloud. New AMD-powered enhancements in Adobe Premiere Pro CC The new OpenCL-accelerated feathering masks tool adds subtlety and finesse when you apply masks to alter, cover, highlight or obscure a specific section of video content over time. The feathering means you can blend the edges of the mask so that it has a more polished, professional appearance. You can use feathered masks with the new mask tracking feature. This lets you create animated masks in Premiere Pro CC that automatically track an object from frame to frame. You also have the option to Dynamic Link to Adobe After Effects™ CC for more advanced tracking tools. So, for example, after using the feathered mask feature to obscure the identity of a witness, that mask can then automatically track the movement of that face from frame to frame as the person moves through a scene. How much time have you spent applying color changes to clips? With Master Clip effects, you can name one clip in your bin to serve as your “master clip.” When you apply one or more AMD-accelerated effects to that clip, the look will than ripple throughout your sequence and update all other instances of that clip. It will save you time and preserve your patience! AMD acceleration also enables powerful, efficient workflows with some of the most popular high resolution cameras and formats. For example, now AMD graphics technology powers the import and playback of native RED camera formats thanks to OpenCL accelerated debayering for the R3D codec. This means that users can directly edit, add effects to and playback RED media files in real-time within Adobe Premiere Pro CC and without conversion, giving them the full benefit of the image quality RED cameras offer. When your project is complete, the render to your final destination format can even be supercharged by using single or dual AMD GPUs for amazing speed. In fact, we are seeing up to 11X better performance made possible from the new optimizations for AMD GPUs.* The new release of Adobe Premiere Pro CC also expands the previously announced support for Blackmagic formats to include the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera compressed, lossless JPEG format. This is great news for anyone who uses this format in their workflow since there is no low resolution proxy option for working directly with it. Now Premiere Pro CC on an AMD-powered system can take advantage of OpenCL accelerated debayering to provide smooth playback with edits and effects. The CinemaDNG workflow has also been expanded to provide hardware-accelerated debayering for Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q monitor/recorder products. Of course, just supporting the formats isn’t enough. Premiere Pro CC now features real-time settings and properties for both CinemaDNG and RED R3D media formats, giving you the control you need to get the look just right. Adobe Premiere Pro CC also adds support for ARRI AMIRA camera’s 3D lookup tables (LUTs) in the ProRes format. With AMD hardware acceleration powering the Lumetri Deep Color Engine, editors can playback the entire palette of AMIRA identified color looks in real-time once the footage is brought into Premiere Pro. More Flexibility for After Effects CC and SpeedGrade CC The latest enhancements extend beyond Premiere Pro CC, the hub of the Adobe Creative Cloud video workflow. Thanks to Adobe’s new Mercury Transmit support, you can add a second reference broadcast monitor for full screen previews of your compositions as you work in After Effects™ CC. Adobe also continues to add flexibility and capability to the SpeedGrade™ CC workflow we announced at IBC 2013. We previously discussed how users on systems with AMD processors can open and enhance Adobe Premiere Pro CC projects, including all of their OpenCL-accelerated effects, directly within SpeedGrade and without the need to first render the Premiere Pro project. Adobe has now added the abilities to turn the Lumetri™ effects on and off, as well to hide or show tracks within SpeedGrade for an easier overview of complex timelines. It even supports the Master Clip workflow described above to simultaneously apply looks to multiple clips. The pace of development on Adobe Creative Cloud CC features that use OpenCL to harness the performance of AMD APUs, Radeon™ graphics and FirePro professional graphics products is breathtaking. Keep an eye here for more in depth looks and highlights. Resources: Clarice Simmons is a Senior Marketing Manager at AMD. Over the last year we have seen that when making comparisons between AMD and Intel APUs using a fair and independent benchmark like PCMark 8.2, our products offer better performance for less cost than competing products in the same class. This fact is gathering an increasingly larger audience around the world and causes many to give AMD a fresh look. However, I believe that it is doing a much bigger service than helping AMD and our channel partners to be successful. I also believe that the use of a fair benchmark to make these comparisons is righting a fundamental wrong. Let’s take a look at the price comparisons between us and our competitor. | AMD | PIB | PCM 8 Work | | Intel | PIB | PCM 8 Work | Difference |
|---|
| A10 7850K | $ 189.00 | 4287 | | i5 4670K | $ 239.00 | 4243 | $50.00 | | A10 7700K | $ 159.00 | 4175 | | i5 4670T | $213.00 | 3857 | $54.00 | | A10 6800K | $139.00 | 4071 | | i5 4440 | $194.00 | 3972 | $55.00 | | A8 6600K | $119.00 | 3828 | | i3 4340 | $157.00 | 3677 | $38.00 | | A6 6400K | $75.00 | 3331 | | Pent. G3430 | $99.00 | 3542 | $24.00 |
The prices were taken on the morning of February 21, 2014 from Newegg.com and the PCMark 8.2 Work scores were taken from our latest Competitive Line Up (CLU) report. The CLU report is an AMD internal report whereby AMD Labs benchmarks our offerings against those of our competitors. I used the PCMark 8.2 “Work” test since, conservatively speaking, it does not focus on graphics performance and thus is usually perceived by reviewers as the toughest PCMark test for AMD.We can see that the differences are significant. If we were to multiply these differences in price by the difference in market share for each SKU, there can be no doubt that quite literally hundreds of millions of dollars are being overspent around the world. At a fundamental level we understand this. But spare a thought for a moment to consider that among potential over spenders are people and organizations that either cannot afford that difference or could spend it in better ways. Schools and universities, hospitals, government departments, transport authorities, train and bus companies come to mind as some of many examples. Why are schools around the world spending money on technology that could be better spent in classrooms and extracurricular activities for children? We could ask why our hospitals are spending money on pricey technology could be spent on extra beds. In the pharmaceutical industry, there is a debate about overcharging for life-saving drugs but I believe a similar debate should take place about the premium that our competitors are charging for APUs that simply should not exist. Encouraging and communicating the serious need for everyone in our industry to adopt the use of an independent benchmark like PCMark 8.2 is pressing. No discussion about APUs should take place without reference to it. For too long consumers and IT authorities have been without a true and fair means to make comparisons between technologies and that is no longer the case. Every one of us at AMD and all of our channel partners stand at a crossroads in our industry. Ahead of us is the chance to make a real difference to the world, a real chance to right a fundamental wrong, focus on the true price of productivity and show how fairer benchmarking can bring about change that can affect millions of people for the better. Please join us in taking up this challenge. Roy Taylor, Corporate Vice President, Worldwide Channel Sales at AMD. SAN FRANCISCO — April 2, 2014 — Wednesday at Build 2014, Microsoft Corp.’s developer conference, the company announced several advances to Windows including Windows Phone 8.1, the availability of Windows 8.1 Update, a converged developer platform, and a $0 royalty licensing program for OEM and ODM partners developing smartphones and tablets with screens under nine inches. Microsoft detailed new developer opportunities on the Windows platform with a common platform across devices, a single toolset, a common infrastructure across the Windows and Windows Phone stores, and a clear commitment to interoperability. The announcements highlight Microsoft’s continued commitment to its partners and the developer community by maximizing opportunities across the broadest range of devices and services. Also as a part of the conference, Nokia announced three new Lumia smartphones for Windows Phone 8.1, including the flagship Lumia 930, the affordable Lumia 635 and the first dual-SIM Lumia 630. “The news today shines a light on continued Windows innovation in ways that benefit our customers, partners and developers alike. Our commitment is to make Windows more personal and accessible to individuals, and to ensure a vibrant ecosystem through closer collaboration with our industry partners,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president, OS Group at Microsoft.
Windows Phone gets even more personal
Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8.1 and introduced Cortana, the world’s first truly personal digital assistant with a persona inspired by a much-loved “Halo” character. Powered by Bing, Cortana gets to know you and gets better over time by asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes you’re interested in something. She detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you. Other new features that make Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones even more personal include Action Center, which complements Live Tiles by showing new activities and notifications at a glance; and Senses, a suite of features that takes the work out of managing data use, storage space and battery life. Windows Phone 8.1 also makes it easier for IT professionals to manage devices and for professionals to connect to essential business apps and services with features such as simplified device enrollment, a built-in mobile device management client, S/MIME for encrypted mail and VPN support. Windows Phone 8.1 will start rolling out to current Windows Phone 8 users over the coming months. It will also come pre-installed on new phones starting this month. Cortana will launch shortly in the U.S. as a beta, in the U.K. and China in the second half of 2014, and in other countries in 2015. Registered developers can update their phones to Windows Phone 8.1 as part of the developer program later this month.
Windows 8.1 Update: easier to use, runs great on more devices
Continuing its commitment to deliver improvements through regular updates, Microsoft also announced Windows 8.1 Update, which includes improvements that provide more of what people love about Windows across more devices: quicker access to what’s important, a more familiar and consistent experience across touch and non-touch devices, and more ways to discover great apps. Key features of the update include user interface improvements for mouse and keyboard users, the ability to access the taskbar from any screen and pin Windows Store apps to the taskbar alongside desktop apps and favorite websites, and performance and compatibility enhancements to Internet Explorer 11. These improvements provide faster, more direct access to the things customers care most about, so activities such as powering down, searching the Web and switching between apps are easier than ever. Navigating with the mouse and keyboard will feel more familiar and intuitive because there’s more consistency with where controls are and how they work. Specific to the enterprise, Windows 8.1 Update offers improved Internet Explorer 8 compatibility on Internet Explorer 11, extends mobile device management functionality, and eases deployment with increased predictability for new operating systems and line-of-business apps by leveraging familiar management tools. Current Windows 8.1 customers will receive the Windows 8.1 Update for free through Windows Update, while Windows 8 customers will receive the update free through the Windows Store, beginning April 8, 2014.* Making Windows devices more affordable Microsoft is evolving its Windows business model to enable partners to offer lower-cost devices in the highly competitive smartphone, tablet and PC categories. Microsoft will offer to hardware partners $0 Windows with services including a one-year subscription to Office 365. With Windows 8.1 Update hardware partners can also more easily build lower-cost machines — such as devices with 1 GB of RAM and a 16GB hard disk drive — without sacrificing the experience customers expect. The combination of new efficiencies and innovations from Microsoft hardware partners means customers will be able to choose from a wider range of Windows devices, particularly budget-friendly notebooks and tablets. Windows developer platform: easily build innovative apps, reach more people Microsoft also announced enhancements in the way developers can build applications that target the full range of Windows devices using Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 Release Candidate. Among other new capabilities, with the introduction of universal projects, developers are able to create apps that can be easily optimized to take full advantage of Windows devices. Developers of all types can draw upon their existing skills to deliver shared experiences for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update. Universal projects allow developers to use approximately 90 percent of the same code, a single packaging system, and a common user interface to target apps for phones, tablets and PCs. To improve the developer experience on Windows, Microsoft announced updates to Windows Store to improve app discoverability and monetization, as well as easier shopping for end users with improved search, more personal recommendations and better merchandising. In addition, later this week, Microsoft will release the next version of Windows App Studio, a Web-based tool for non-developers that enables the creation of universal Windows apps in a single project. To help developers build innovative apps for Windows using a natural user interface, Microsoft detailed plans for Kinect for Windows v2, coming this summer, with a new sensor and SDK that will enable developers to create Windows Store apps, with the Kinect sensor, for the first time. The Kinect for Windows v2 sensor offers more precision, responsiveness and intuitive capabilities. Developers and partner companies, such as Reflexion Health and Freak’n Genius, are already doing great things through the Kinect for Windows v2 developer preview program. Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.
